Inova provides coverage to help protect your income in the event of a disability.

Overview

The loss of income due to illness or injury can cause serious financial hardship for your family. Disability insurance, provided through The Hartford, replaces a portion of your income to help you continue paying your bills and meeting your financial obligations during this difficult time.

Disability Insurance Plans

Short-Term Disability

Inova provides company-paid coverage that pays you a disability benefit for up to 26 weeks.

Long-Term Disability

Inova provides company-paid long-term coverage that protects you from the financial impact of an extended disability.

Long-Term Disability Buy-Up

You can purchase additional LTD coverage to provide a higher monthly benefit.

Short-Term Disability

You receive Short-Term Disability (STD) coverage automatically at no cost to you. Coverage is available if you become disabled due to a non-occupational illness or injury for more than seven calendar days. If you are approved for disability benefits by The Hartford, STD will replace 100% of your weekly covered earnings for the first 6 weeks. Then the benefit will be 66.67% for the remainder of the maximum benefit period, up to 26 weeks.

All active, full-time and part-time team members budgeted to work a minimum of 20 hours per week are eligible for coverage the first of the month coincident with or following date of hire. All Team Members should be aware of their responsibilities before and during any Leave period by referring to the Team Member LOA Responsibilities. After any disability period, team members are required to provide a Fitness for Duty Form completed by their treating physician, approving a return to work and specifying any physical restrictions or limitations. The Fitness for Duty Form must be submitted to eServices@inova.org or faxed to 703-205-2144 no later than 2 business days prior to the actual return to work date.

Long-Term Disability

Long-term disability (LTD) insurance provides income replacement benefits if you are injured or ill for 180 days. Your long-term disability insurance coverage, provided at no cost to you, is equal to 60% of your covered earnings, up to a maximum benefit of $8,500 per month. Different coverage levels apply to Executives, Management and Physicians.

Long-Term Disability Buy-Up

Long-term Disability Buy-up provides an additional 10% of income replacement benefits if you are injured or ill for 180 days. Your basic long-term disability insurance coverage is provided at no cost to you, and is equal to 60% of your covered earnings, up to a maximum benefit of $8,500 per month. If you elect to have the Long-term Disability Buy-Up, you will pay the cost to receive 70% of your covered earnings up to a maximum benefit of $8,500 per month. Different benefit maximums apply to Executives, Management and Physicians.​

Coverage and Premium Calculation

Your life and disability insurance coverage amounts, and premium payroll deductions are fixed throughout the year and do not change if your salary or age changes during the year.

Your salary as of the first Monday in October of the previous calendar year is used to calculate your coverage amounts and premium payroll deductions; e.g., your 2024 coverages are calculated using your salary as of October 2, 2023.

Your age as of January 1 of the current year is used to determine your age bracket and to calculate your premium deductions.
